The UK Practical Driving Test: A Step-by-Step Guide
Passing the UK practical driving test is a significant milestone in the journey to becoming a fully licensed driver. This article provides a step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect on the day of the test.
Before the Test
Ensure that you’ve practiced sufficiently, understand the test format, and have prepared all necessary documentation.
The Test
1. Eyesight Check
The test begins with an eyesight check. You’ll need to read a number plate from a certain distance.
2. ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions
You’ll be asked two vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.
3. General Driving Ability
You’ll drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. The examiner will give you directions that you should follow.
4. Reversing Your Vehicle
The examiner will ask you to do one of the three reversing exercises:
- Parallel park at the side of the road.
- Park in a parking bay - either by driving in and reversing out or reversing in and driving out.
- Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and then rejoin the traffic.
5. Independent Driving
You’ll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following either directions from a satnav or traffic signs.
6. Emergency Stop
The examiner might ask you to demonstrate the emergency stop.
After the practical test, the examiner will tell you if you’ve passed or not.
Remember, the goal is not just to pass the test but to become a safe and responsible driver. If you don’t pass the first time, take the feedback provided by the examiner and work on it for your next test.
